What is aluminium foil?
Aluminium Foil is an insulator - what it does is help keep the temperature of something the same by surrounding it. It reflects heat off itself to the source. For example, if you had roast beef and wanted to keep it warm, you'd wrap it in some foil. The foil would come into contact with the heat coming from the hot beef and that heat would be kept inside the foil. It is scientifically called a radiant insulator.
Aluminium Foil is made in 4 steps:
1) A substance called bauxite is mined from the ground. There a five bauxite mines in Australia. Three are near Perth, one is in Gove, and one is at Weipa.
2) The bauxite is refined and we get alumina, scientifically called aluminium oxide.
3) We run the aluminium through electrically charged, red hot, carbon rods and get liquid aluminium.
4) We run the aluminium through rollers, of decreasing sizes. Kind of like making pasta!
